The high bar we set for ourselves and our work necessitates being at our most creative and productive, which is intrinsically linked to how we feel. Health and wellbeing — including nutrition, activity and sleep — is increasingly being spoken about in the same breath as business outcomes. That’s why we invited wellness guru, Dan Pardi, CEO of humanOS.me, to Butchershop to talk about how to optimize our sleep, diet and activity to be our most productive, effective and happy.
We can think of the body as an operating system — something Dan coined as our Human OS — and like any operating system, there’s myriad things we can do to function at our best. We were given advice on nutrition and diet for general wellbeing, incorporating consistent movement throughout the day to combat prolonged periods of being sedentary, and the future of wellness technology, from fitness tracking to ‘neurohacking’.
Dan also talked to us about a truth that has become widely accepted in the wellness world: You’re not at your best when you’re not getting enough quality sleep. For a lot of people, their habits aren’t conducive to getting a good night’s rest. Technology wakes us up, and puts us to sleep; we mindlessly scroll through Instagram feeds, watch YouTube videos, or, due to a combination of choice paralysis and a penchant for trashy reality TV, watch back-to-back episodes of The Real Housewives on Netflix (Okay, maybe the last one is just us, but you get the gist.)
Circadian rhythms, sleep-wake cycles, blue light versus red light, monophasic sleep patterns; Dan covered the spectrum of sleep, explaining exactly how significant the impact of poor quality sleep is on performance and life in general, arming us with advice and tools to modify our behaviors to achieve better sleep.
The way we work is changing; there’s a recognition that health and wellness is a critical component of both company culture and the quality of its work. That’s why we think it’s important to have people like Dan talk to the crew here at Butchershop, to share their knowledge and help us create a great place to work.
